Back in 1709, Peter I founded the Model-Chamber, where shipbuilding drawings were kept. It was here that all the projects of the built ships were then brought together. The exposition of the museum is constantly replenished - now it occupies an area of ​​about 8,000 m². The museum employs more than 300 employees, 45 of which are scientific. The museum receives 400,000 visitors annually. Its structure includes a scientific library and workshops for the restoration of furniture, paintings and fabrics. It has a large group of experts. Museum employees are engaged in exposition, fund, educational and information work. The museum has a department of scientific acquisition and a studio of marine painters. To date, the Naval Museum has an atrium exhibition space, six halls of the exhibition complex and six halls with a permanent exhibition, which contain the main exhibits from the main part of the collection. About 2,000 ship models are stored here. The total museum fund is more than 700,000 items.
