The history of the museum-monument begins in 1928, when the exhibition "History of the construction of St. Isaac's Cathedral" was opened in St. Isaac's Cathedral. During the Great Patriotic War and the siege of Leningrad, exhibits from museums of the city and suburban palaces of Petrodvorets, Pavlovsk, Pushkin and Gatchina were transported to St. Isaac's Cathedral for preservation.
